High Point Market Trends - Spring 2017
High Point Market in North Carolina is the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world, bringing more than 75,000 people every six months to over 2,000 Exhibitors. Showrooms are only open to the trade and not the general public. The market introduces interior designers, architects, and buyers to thousands of new product introductions a year. We were lucky enough to spend a few full days at Market from 8AM to 8PM and ware able to tackle most of the top showrooms. However, next year we will stay longer so we can be inspired by ALL of the major showrooms. Check out our top-picks and favorites from Highpoint Market 2017.
Classic Bedroom Designs
We are constantly keeping our eye out for great bedroom settings and design ideas. While at Market, we found fantastic bedroom decor inspiration and hope that the four bedroom photos below might inspire you to re-decorate your own bedroom. A huge trend that has been increasing in popularity over the last few years is the use of mismatch nightstands on either side of the bed. The days of matchy-matchy furniture have come and are on the verge of disappearing. Two different nightstands add interest in a room that can be so boring and mundane. We also noticed that the beds and nightstands had mixed finishes such as wood & metal combinations, wood & acrylic combinations, or even two different wood finishes.
One simple way of incorporating a design trend without having to replace everything is by purchasing throw pillows that can be easily replaced. Fun colorful pillows were displayed in almost every showroom at Market but the images below were two of our favorites. The Picasso pillows are a great way to add color and a little funk to a room and would look fabulous on a white or navy blue sofa. Black & white is classic and timeless but we are seeing a fantastic use of bold geometric patterns in fabrics, wallpapers, & tiles. Unique pillows can bring both style and comfort to your home.
Chairs & Barstools
The top trends in upholstery furniture include but are not limited to: mid-century modern designs, white & bleached wood finishes with contrasting fabrics, the use of exposed wood framing and also pops of acrylic detailing. By adding a few pieces with unique detailing you can transform your space from uninteresting to stylishly fashionable.
Would you have guessed that the first chair below was a recliner? This is one of the best-looking most comfortable mid-century modern recliner. Doesn't look like a recliner? Well, its foot rest is tucked up under the seat when it the upright position.
Mirrors mirrors everywhere. However, finding the perfect mirror in the right size, shape and color can sometimes be difficult even with the wide range of options. We love funky mirrors above powder room sinks, above entry consoles and even just hanging on the wall by themselves. Accents such as mirrors not only add style to a space but they can also make a room look larger and brighter. Sunburst mirrors have been popular for quite a few years and each manufacturer has its' own variation of the design. These are two of our favorite sunburst mirrors that we saw at High Point pictured below.
Consoles & Buffets
Several of the console & buffet tables we spotted at High Point Market had a combination of two finishes such as wood with metal, wood with acrylic, or even two different wood finishes. Bleached and pickled woods seemed to be extremely popular with the up and coming furniture collections. According the manufacturers, clean-lined furniture with modern design elements have been selling the best in the mainstream so they are transitioning their furniture lines for this increase in demand.
Large over-scaled lighting seemed to be a crowd pleaser as we walked through the major lighting manufacturer's showrooms. One particular oversized hand woven pendant from Palecek was 42 inches in diameter and would make an amazing statement piece in someone's dining area. Gold and antique brass finishes with exposed bulbs are just as favored as they were a few years ago. One of our favorite chandeliers from Arteriors mimics a budding flower.
Sofas & Sectionals
Below is an image of the Bernhardt modern block sectional can be arranged in different configurations to suit your needs and space. It's surprisingly fun for a waiting room or a large gathering space. Not only did we see exceptional designs in sectionals, but we saw channeling in several manufacturer's upholstery lines. So we think channeling will appear in more and more pieces in late 2017, early 2018. Another great detail on sofas is the use of wood detailing on the arms and backs of sofas such as the one pictured below.
Again, we are seeing a range of finishes on desks and secretaries that lean toward a modern trend. One of our favorite more modern desks by Brownstone is made with a wood top and clear acrylic leg. A year ago secretary desks were extremely hard to find but it seemed like nearly every showroom had at least one secretary desk. Maybe the rise of urban living is creating a demand for more multipurpose storage pieces? West Bros Furniture had a stunning mid-century modern secretary in every collection.
